Academics

Metropolitan International School aims to develop students who share a love of learning through language, curriculum, cultural diversity and educational exploration. Students can enjoy a dynamic and interactive approach to improving their English skills while preparing for Pre-university, all while building a lifelong network of friends and mentors.

Established in 2007, the Metropolitan International School (MIS) offers an academically rigorous curriculum for international students ranging from early learning ages to pre-university (as young as 3 months to 18+ years of age).

MIS provides a welcoming opportunity for international families wishing to ensure continuity in their children's education. We offer not only an internationally competitive education in the English and German languages, but also ensure that German children will fulfill all requirements of compulsory education.

Our ongoing mission is to inspire a passion for learning, to pursue excellence, and to develop compassionate global citizens.

Be a global citizen. Act with passion and compassion. Help make this world safer today and for the generations that will follow us.- UN Foundation

To achieve these high standards, MIS provides the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, along with the Cambridge IGCSE and Diploma qualifications.

In addition, MIS is accredited by the Hessian Ministry of Education as a "staatlich anerkannte Ergänzungsschule" (state-approved supplementary school). This means that students attending MIS do have the ability to transfer into the German system if they wish.

The globally-recognized International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is accredited as equivalent to the Mittlere Reife. (The Mittlere Reife is a school-leaving certificate in Germany that is usually awarded after ten years of schooling.)

Under the national policy in place since 1986 (Vereinbarung über die Anerkennung des International Baccalaureate Diploma), the IB Diploma is recognized as a qualification equivalent to the Abitur for entry into higher education in Germany (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) and to universities around the world.

Further information on each of these curricula can be found below.

The Cambridge International curriculum sets a global standard for education, and is recognized by universities and employers worldwide. This curriculum is flexible, challenging and inspiring, culturally sensitive yet with an international approach. Cambridge students develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. They also gain the essential skills they need for success at university and in their future careers.

Cambridge Secondary 1 (typically 11-14 year olds) offers a flexible curriculum with integrated assessment in Mathematics, English and Science. It builds on the foundation of Cambridge Primary (under 11 years old.)

Cambridge Secondary 2 (IGCSE) builds on the foundation of Cambridge Secondary 1, and supports schools using learner-centered and enquiry-based approaches to learning. Cambridge IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds, and is an international passport to progression and success.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education aiming to develop students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically. It is respected by top universities across the globe.

The Diploma Programme (DP) aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge. The DP curriculum is made up of six subject groups along with the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge, creativity, activity, service and the extended essay.

Through this highly respected curriculum, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service. Through this curriculum, students become prepared for university with academic breath and depth, independent learning skills, and a genuinely international qualification.  You can learn more on their website here.

We are honored to be one of the only schools in Germany to offer the The Leader in Me curriculum, which teaches 21st-century leadership and life skills to young learners, and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

Leader in Me is aligned with best-in-class content and concepts practiced by global education thought leaders. It provides a logical, sequential and balanced process to help schools proactively design the culture that reflects their vision.

Content from Stephen Covey's book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a key component of the overall Leader in Me curriculum. The 7 Habits is a synthesis of universal and timeless principles such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal.

The Leader in Me paradigm sees that every child is capable of being a leader. MIS is proud to be one of more than 2,000 public, private, charter and magnet schools across 35 countries to have adopted the Leader in Me program. You can learn more by visiting their site here
